Just as we witness the turning of the seasons in the world around us, I have come to realize that we experience changing seasons within us as well. In nature, winter is a time of retreat and rest. In this part of the world, everything becomes darker, colder, and less colorful. Though life is still bustling all around me, it becomes quieter and more subdued (just as I do). While I welcome the rest and reflection that winter invites, there are times when I feel like the cold darkness is heavy, and feelings of hopelessness can ensnare me.* And though I understand that it is important to give yourself space to feel your feelings and not run away from discomfort, it is also important to give yourself some extra self-care during these times.
A huge part of self-care is learning how to meet each shift within us and offer ourselves the support that we need in the moment. Whether my lows stem from the lack of sunlight and warmth during winter or from navigating the difficult times we are living in, I make sure to have various methods of care on deck to help ease my way gently through the gloom. Herbal allies have a large role to play in offering me support. Botanical allyship comes in many forms; here are a few preparations that I have leaned on in trying times.
MOOD SUPPORTING EXTRACT BLEND
Extracts are one of the most convenient ways of taking herbs. Most often found in smaller bottles, it is easy to pop them into a bag and take them with you as you move through your day.
- 1 part organic lemon balm extract
- 1 part organic ashwagandha extract
- 1/2 part organic rhodiola extract
- 1/2 part organic oats extract
- 1/2 part organic holy basil extract
- 1/2 part organic linden extract
Directions
- Mix extracts together in a dropper bottle, shake well, and use as needed.
UPLIFTING TEA BLEND
The simple act of drinking a cup of tea invites us to take a quiet moment and to be present with ourselves. The act of pouring the water, waiting while the tea steeps, and stirring a spoonful of honey into it can all feel very meditative and offer some respite during difficult or chaotic moments. I like to enjoy this tea blend while listening to music I love and either journaling or reading.
Ingredients
- 1 part organic medium roast yaupon tea
- 1 part organic peppermint leaf
- 1 part organic lemon balm
- 1/2 part organic lemon verbena
- 1/2 part organic vana holy basil
- 1/2 part organic lemon peel
Directions
- Mix dried herbs thoroughly in bowl before transferring to airtight container for storage.
- Place 1 tablespoon of tea in strainer and steep in 8 ounces of hot water for 10-15 minutes or until desired flavor is reached.
- Add optional sweetener or a squirt of fresh lemon and enjoy!

LIGHTEN AND BRIGHTEN DIFFUSER BLEND
Essential oils offer a unique form of botanical support because they are used externally and can target our olfactory systems. When used in a diffuser, they have the power to both lift our moods and subtly transform the spaces we inhabit.

- 4 drops organic bergamot essential oil
- 3 drops organic lemon essential oil
- 2 drops organic lavender essential oil
- 1 drop organic benzoin essential oil

Final Thoughts
In addition to seeking herbal support, it is also important to look at your sleep schedule, diet, and exercise. All of these things can directly impact our mental well-being and can be a lot harder to maintain during the lowlight months. I recommend starting with small and easily attainable changes, coax yourself out on a walk around the block, find a vitamin you know you can get yourself to take regularly, or go to bed 30 minutes earlier. Sometimes, just the simple act of making choices that are healthy for our bodies and minds can serve as a simple but vital reminder that underneath it all, we still have the capacity to love and care for ourselves.
