Since our beginnings in 1987, Mountain Rose Herbs has been committed to supporting farmers who cultivate herbs without the use of synthetic chemicals. We seek out and foster relationships with farmers who operate in an ethically and environmentally responsible manner. In particular, our farmers support organic and sustainable agriculture, just like us! All of our crops are cultivated organically, without chemicals, and/or are consciously wildharvested. One of the most critically important components is ... soil!

Soil is a living organism made up of minerals and organic matter with the ability to sequester carbon, filter water, and reduce erosion. Maintaining and rebuilding soil health is crucial to producing food, including our botanical goodies.

  2. Builds soil health by using cover crops and rotating crops, thus reducing erosion.

Along with health benefits, organic and sustainable farming practices have a long list of environmental benefits researched by an array of different groups. We are proud supporters of the nonprofits and third-party organizations that research organic and conventional farming. For those with an inquisitive mind, check out these groups: Cornucopia Institute, IMO’s Fair for Life program, Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service, Oregon Tilth, Organic Seed Alliance, The Organic Center, Organic Farming Research Foundation, Organic Consumers Association, and Pesticide Action Network.

Not only are we passionate about sourcing organic and sustainable botanicals, but we also take steps to ensure the health of our main campus here in Eugene, Oregon. We utilize organic landscaping practices and our campus is Salmon-Safe certified. We conserve water with a satellite-controlled irrigation system, maintain a pesticide-free facility, and utilize a bio-swale and pond, which naturally filters roof and pavement runoff.

Alyssa Bascue, Director of Sustainability, is a trusted professional in her field with a passion for employee engagement and reducing environmental impacts of business operations, including emissions, energy, waste, and water. Growing up in an income-sharing, egalitarian community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, she’s a farm girl at heart. She received her bachelor's degree in Environmental Sociology, which helps to support Mountain Rose Herbs' mission of supporting organic agriculture and embodying socially conscious business practices. Alyssa completed a nine-week Master Recycler training and is well-known in town as an Employee Transportation Coordinator. She currently volunteers with Friends of Trees, Provender Alliance, Sustainable Food Trade Association, and the Willamette Valley Sustainable Foods Alliance. And she is an active member of the International Society for Sustainability Professionals. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, reading, cooking spicy foods, hiking and camping with her husband and brindle pup.
