Tulsi Oxymel for Respiratory Support

A bottle of oxymel with honey and dried herbs around it with a cup nearby

Holy Basil is one of my absolute favorite herbs, and I know that so many others surely feel the same. Not only is this special plant fragrant and beautiful, but it’s also a valuable ally in the apothecary. The herb is most well-known for its adaptogenic properties. Simply put, holy basil helps the body regulate the effects of stress, bringing balance to our body and spirit. In addition to this, tulsi supports immune function and digestive health, making it a wonderful addition to our winter wellness regimen.

My favorite way to work with tulsi for respiratory support is as an oxymel. This blend of infused vinegar and honey can help break up congestion and ease the occasional dry, scratchy cough. I also like to add plantain leaf to the blend for its mild demulcent properties. The key to this recipe is using three times more honey and vinegar than herbs. This makes a soothing herbal preparation that comforts the throat while tasting amazing.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Combine the herbs in a jar and cover with honey.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, bring the vinegar just to a simmer, then pour into the jar.
  3. Cap and shake vigorously to mix well.
  4. Remove the cap and let the concoction cool to room temperature. Then cover and let steep for about two weeks, shaking the jar whenever you remember.
  5. After two weeks, place the closed jar in a pot of hot water to soften the honey, then strain out the herbs.

How To Use

  • Add 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of the oxymel to hot or cold water whenever you feel the need.
