Menstrual Self-Care: Tea Blends For the Full Moon Cycle

Menstrual Self Care Moon

The connection between the moon's phases and the menstrual cycle is rooted in various cultures across history. This connection is grounded in the observation of natural rhythms and cycles, which were often personified and mythologized to explain and connect human experience with the divine and natural world. The word menstruation derives from the Latin and Greek word for moon, mene.

Menstrual Self Care Horizontal!

The ancient Greeks had a profound reverence for the moon, which they personified through various goddesses, each representing different aspects of the moon. While there is no scientific evidence of a direct link between phases of the moon and menstruation, there is no denying the bones-deep association and draw toward the moon that is cross-cultural and generational in nature.

I find that each phase of the cycle is something that, as women, we experience quite intensely—sometimes to the extent that it can be overwhelming and overburdening to our senses. For this reason, I like to connect each phase to a mythological goddess and her corresponding brew, designed to help ground and elevate us. I personally believe that it is most empowering to lean into the nature of each cycle rather than trying to cover it up, and celebrating these times with self-care rituals can make the journey a rewarding experience rather than one to dread.

Menstruation: Retreat with Persephone

This phase is a time for introspection and renewal. We can address the importance of self-care through a calming tea that helps to soothe menstrual discomfort. This moment is ideal for creating a safe, comforting space for ourselves to honor the process of release. The brew for this phase is gentle yet nourishing, aimed at supporting uterine health and balancing our flow.

Raspberry works as the base for uterine support and menstrual health; Chamomile is calming and soothing; Lady’s Mantle helps with balancing flow; Cinnamon is warming and supports circulation; Rose Hips, hawthorn berries,  and yarrow supports blood and fluid balance; ginger aids in circulation and the discomforts of cramping.

  3. For each cup of tea, use about 1 heaping teaspoon of the blend.
  4. Boil water, pour it over the tea blend, and steep for 5-10 minutes to fully extract the herbs' properties.
  5. Sweeten with honey if desired, and enjoy the calming, healing effects of this tea.

Follicular Phase: Awakening with Artemis

During the follicular phase, we tend to feel more independent, energetic, and strong-willed. Like Artemis, we emerge from our inner world, ready to explore, take risks, and embrace the opportunities that await in the outer world. This phase is a time of renewal, where our creativity and vitality are awakened, allowing us to connect more deeply with our ambitions and desires.

Nettles provide courage, elderberries offer wisdom, and rosemary enhances clarity. I actually find that of all the brews I’ve concocted here, this is the one that I most personally enjoy. There is something so fresh and awakening about this brew that I like to drink it during any phase of my cycle!

Artemis’ Brew

Makes about 1/2 cup loose tea blend.

Ingredients

Directions
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and mix them well until evenly distributed.
  2. Store the blend in an airtight container in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to brew.
  3. For each cup of tea, use about 1 heaping teaspoon of the blend.
  4. Boil fresh water and pour it over the tea blend. Let it steep for 5-7 minutes, allowing the herbs to infuse fully.
  5. Sweeten with honey or lemon if desired to add an extra boost of energy and refreshment.

Ovulation: Radiance with Aphrodite

This phase is undoubtedly when most of us feel our most refreshed and gorgeous selves. I like to think of this time as when the outward expression of one’s inner beauty comes into being. Here, we are guided by Aphrodite, who brings us rose and damiana to celebrate our sensual beings. With this brew, you boost your confidence and allure, truly embodying Aphrodite’s essence.

Aphrodites Blend

Aphrodite’s Brew

Makes about 1/2 cup loose tea blend.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl, mixing well to ensure the herbs are evenly distributed.
  2. Store the blend in an airtight container, away from light and heat to preserve the tea’s freshness.
  3. Use 1 heaping teaspoon of the blend per cup of tea.
  4. Boil water and pour it over the tea blend, allowing it to steep for 5-7 minutes. For a richer flavor, steep for up to 10 minutes.
  5. Sweeten to taste with honey and milk, or enjoy the tea as is.

Luteal Phase: Reflection with Hestia

It is during this phase that we retreat to prepare for the cycle to begin anew, this phase is a time to slow down and nurture oneself and one’s inner space. Calming and grounding herbs are needed, creating your connection with Hestia, goddess of the hearth and home.

For this phase, the brew is rich in roots and spices that offer grounding properties. Roasted dandelion and burdock root support cleansing and help to balance the digestive system, which can often feel sluggish during this phase. Cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom not only provide warmth and comfort, but they also act as natural mood enhancers—helping to ease any emotional fluctuations during the luteal phase. Cloves add a final touch of spice and grounding, making this tea a perfect ally during moments of reflection and renewal.

Hestia’s Brew

Makes about 1/2 cup loose tea blend.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl until evenly distributed.
  2. Transfer to an airtight container and keep it in a cool, dark place until ready to use.
  3. Use 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of the blend per 8-ounce cup of liquid.
  4. Steep in boiling milk for 7–10 minutes (or simmer gently on the stove for a stronger brew). I like to use coconut milk for this, which enhances the tea's soothing qualities.
  5. Sweeten with honey and a sprinkling of cinnamon on top for added comfort. Strain and enjoy.

By drawing on the wisdom of ancient goddesses and crafting brews inspired by their mythologies, we can create sacred rituals that support and sustain us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Each phase holds its own unique energy, and by fully aligning ourselves with them, we can feel more in tune with our natural cycles.

Remember to listen to your body, honor your needs, and celebrate the beauty of each phase—knowing that you are in alignment with the timeless rhythms of nature.
