Partnering to Protect Pollinators

Bee on Lavender

At Mountain Rose Herbs, we believe that nurturing our community and environment go hand in hand. This philosophy is at the heart of our partnerships with local nonprofit organizations who align with our values in land stewardship and environmental justice. One of those partners is Beyond Toxics, an Oregon-based key player dedicated to building a community-driven environmental justice movement in Oregon. Beyond Toxics empowers communities affected by pollution and climate change by working to protect our precious pollinators, restore native plants, and foster a healthier, more sustainable world.

Pollinators, particularly bees, play a crucial role in our ecosystems. They are essential for the reproduction of about 75% of flowering plants and nearly 35% of global crops. However, these vital creatures are facing unprecedented challenges. Climate change, habitat destruction, and the widespread use of pesticides are decimating pollinator populations. Some of the primary pesticides affecting bees are neonicotinoids and chlorpyrifos. These highly toxic, synthetic chemicals remain in the environment for years, contaminating nectar, pollen, leaves, and other plant parts. This is why Mountain Rose Herbs, along with Beyond Toxics, has strongly advocated for the prohibition of chlorpyrifos in Oregon and a statewide ban against use of harmful pesticides. By partnering with local organizations that support our values, we can protect our precious pollinators.

How You Can Help

Protecting our pollinators requires collective action. Here are ways you can contribute:

  1. Go Pesticide-Free: Maintain a healthy yard by avoiding pesticides and opting for natural lawn care solutions.
  2. Plant Bee-Friendly Flowers: Grow flowers that bloom from spring to fall to provide continuous food sources for pollinators.
  3. Advocate for Change: Encourage local food growers, nurseries, and garden centers to stop selling plants treated with neonicotinoids.
  4. Support Organic Agriculture: Choose businesses that prioritize organic farming practices to protect humans, plants, wildlife, and the climate.
  5. Back Non-Profit Efforts: Support organizations that champion stronger pollinator protections.
