Homemade Herbal Mouthwash Recipes

Written by Alyssa | November 29, 2021

The last time I picked up a bottle of generic mouthwash, I couldn’t pronounce most of the ingredients listed. That’s a serious red flag for me. I always tried to take care of my teeth and even though I brush twice a day and floss a few times a week, I felt like something was missing. So, I decided that I didn’t want to skip the swish and spit part of my dental hygiene routine. Natural, homemade mouthwash to the rescue! Organic extracts and teas are wonderful ingredients to help you avoid artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and sweeteners often found in commercial mouthwash products. There are more than a few herbs you can use as a base to both flavor your mouthwash and lend their herbal superpowers to your DIY creation.

Organic rose tea offers an astringent base and relief from occasionally irritated gums. Organic peppermint is a classically cooling and refreshing flavor with significant cleansing properties. Organic sage has been traditionally used for its germ-fighting properties and makes an excellent application for oral and dental care.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients and store in a glass bottle or jar for no longer than one day. Shake before each use.

Pro Tips

  • The alcohol extract and refrigeration should preserve the first two recipes for a little while. Although, I don't know for sure how long since the batch is usually gone within a week.
  • If your teeth are sensitive to cold, you can mix it with a little hot water to warm.
