Skincare is all about balance. This is the basis of each natural skin care class that I teach. We should never be in battle with our skin, but rather, aim to help it maintain the balance it seeks. The cosmetics industry tells us the opposite. It tells us to use this cream for "anti-aging" or that treatment to "fight acne". They also push us into using harsh, drying soaps for our skin, especially oily skin. But did you know that oily skin is most commonly the skin’s natural defense to being too dry skin? In other words, the cleansers used to get rid of oil are actually perpetuating the problem.
I have found that the key to natural skin care is hydration and skin serums are one of the best and easiest ways to achieve moisture balance. Serums are made with natural plant oils and help nourish and refresh dry skin. They can also be tailored to many kinds of skin types. Oils are also a multi-purpose ingredient and can be used in other DIY skin care recipes like lip balms, lotions, bath bombs, etc.
In this serum recipe, I called upon jojoba, oil, rosehip seed oil, pomegranate seed oil, and tamanu oil. I love how quickly this blend absorbs into the skin, leaving my face soft and hydrated, but not greasy. Tamanu oil is one that most people don't know much about so I think it's important to share additional information about that specific part of this blend. It is a beautiful green color with a sweet aroma. It contains antioxidants that support all skin types, especially mature skin. It's truly an incredible oil to work with!
For high-quality skin oils, you want to make sure that they are certified organic and minimally processed. I like to use cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils that are unrefined. Solvent-extracted oils pose a host of concerns and also result in an inferior oil. Mountain Rose Herbs does not carry any carrier oils that have been solvent extracted.
Makes about 2.5 ounces of serum.
