DIY Detangler & Anti-Frizz Spray Recipe with Marshmallow Root

Written by Hailey | February 25, 2024

Whether your unique mane coils into bouncy ringlets, twists into wild waves, or cascades down as straight as a pin, you’ve undoubtably experienced bad hair days. On too many occasions to count in my life, I’ve stumbled out of bed in the morning and glanced into the mirror to find a sight only explainable by a bird crafting a nest out of my frazzled locks overnight. After reaching for every fancy spritz and spray buried in my cabinets, I’d more often than not be left with relatively tamed frizz, greasy roots, and a wafting heavy perfume fragrance that was less than desirable. Inevitably, I would succumb to the classic slicked-back ponytail or throwing my mop of hair under a big hat on days such as these.

With countless hair care products out there promising to fix all your mane-taming concerns, finding the right fit for your specific needs can be overwhelming. So, what is the solution? Customizable hair care made by the hands that know your unique locks better than anyone, yourself!

Utilizing the mucilaginous quality of organic marshmallow root, combined with aloe vera gel and hair-nourishing oils, this detangler coats and softens to untangle even the peskiest and most stubborn knots. The addition of lavender and rosemary essential oils adds a delicate herbaceous fragrance while simultaneously offering the hair-nurturing benefits of these precious botanicals. For those who prefer to get creative with essential oils that are good for hair, the beauty of this DIY recipe is its endless customizable potential!

If you’re ready to say goodbye to the dreaded bed head and leave shaggy hairdos a thing of the past, this detangling spritz is truly a one-stop-shop for tamed, soft, shiny, and ready-to-go hair within just minutes of rolling out of dreamland.

"Tame the Mane" Detangler Spray

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Place water and marshmallow root in small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Cook until reduced by half, about 30 minutes.
  2. Strain out the liquid and compost or upcycle the spent marshmallow root.
  3. Allow marshmallow tea mixture to cool.
  4. Pour mixture into an 4 oz. spray bottle. Add aloe vera gel, lavender essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and optional carrier oil of choice.
  5. Place spray bottle cap on and shake mixture vigorously.
  6. Spritz throughout hair from root to tip as desired.
  7. Keep refrigerated and use within 4-7 days.

Pro Tips

  • Although this detangler contains natural preservatives such as essential oils, water-based products have a relatively short shelf life; hence the need to refrigerate. Add between 1-2 Tbsp of witch hazel to extend shelf life for another few days and store in the refrigerator. Please note that the alcohol content in witch hazel is not a good choice for brittle or damaged hair.
