Garcinia comes from a fruit-bearing tree that also is the source of kokum butter. Native to India and parts of Asia, garcinia fruit has been used for thousands of years for the distinct sour taste that it lends to foods. It’s also known to make the foods it is added to more filling and satisfying. It is often used as an alternative to tamarind in curries or to add flavor and tartness to dal. For those looking to use it in non-culinary applications, it can be made into tea (though the taste is obviously quite sour) or more frequently it’s encapsulated or taken as an extract.
