When we make gifts by hand, we can pour our love into our creations, and I find the results are often more appreciated than when I give gifts that I have purchased at a store.

Some Yuletides ago, I created this simple yet elegant skin treat I like to call my “[Merry and Bright Salt Scrub](https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/diy-merry-and-bright-salt-scrub-recipe?hs_amp=true#scrub).”

For the scent of the scrub, I combined [essential oils](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/catalog/aromatherapy/essential-oils) that are reminiscent of a [forest](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/cascadia-aroma-spray/profile) in winter, along with spearmint for some festive pep. This scrub tends to be grounding, yet uplifting—a perfect combination for when we feel like [celebrating](https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/pumpkin-spice-fashioned?hsLang=en-us), and also for those times when we're feeling a bit of the [holiday blues](https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/winter-blues-spray?hsLang=en-us).

## Merry and Bright Homemade Exfoliating Salt Scrub

*Makes enough finished salt scrub to fill 4 of our 4 oz. [glass salve jars](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/glass-salve-jar/profile) or [white plastic jars](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/plastic-jar/profile).*

**Ingredients**

- 1 3/4 cups [Epsom salt](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/epsom-salt/profile)
- 1/2 cup [red Alaea salt](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/red-alaea-salt/profile)
- 1 cup [organic, Non-GMO Project Verified sunflower oil](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/sunflower-oil/profile)
- 28 drops [organic black spruce essential oil](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/black-spruce-essential-oil/profile)
- 24 drops [organic spearmint essential oil](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/spearmint-essential-oil/profile)
- 12 drops [organic juniper berry essential oil](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/juniper-berry-essential-oil/profile)
- 8 drops [organic lavender essential oil](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/lavender-essential-oil/profile)

**Directions**

1. Combine Epsom and red Alaea salts in a ceramic or glass bowl and mix well with a spoon.
2. Pour in sunflower oil and mix until the scrub reaches your preferred consistency—I like mine to be slightly grainy. You can add a bit more oil if you prefer a more liquid consistency.
3. Carefully drip essential oils into your salt/oil blend and mix again.
4. Scoop salt scrub into your desired containers, [label](https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/labeling-handcrafted-goods?hsLang=en-us), and decorate with ribbon or any other trimmings you like.

**Pro Tips**

- When making this as a last minute gift, you can substitute sea salt and organic sugar for the Epsom salt and red Alaea salt if you don’t have these on hand. [Organic olive oil](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/olive-oil-organic-extra-virgin/profile) can be substituted for the organic sunflower oil.
- If you don’t have all the listed essential oils, any festive essential oils can be substituted for the suggested blend—[organic peppermint](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/peppermint-essential-oil/profile) and [organic sweet orange essential oils](https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/products/orange-sweet-essential-oil/profile) make a great combination! Or, use a single essential oil like lavender, frankincense, or spearmint.
- You can reuse clean, wide mouth jam jars for packaging your scrub.
- Recipe can be doubled if you want to make more gifts.
- Make sure to save some salt scrub for yourself!
