The sun was shining and the bicycle wheels were spinning during the 2018 Mountain Rose Herbs Earth Day Celebration. Employees were in an especially festive mood because they were getting free, professional bike tune-ups as a gift from Mountain Rose Herbs!
Christopher, our Customer Service Representative, is one of the many bike enthusiasts who work at Mountain Rose Herbs. He had the idea to provide tune-ups to help folks get their bikes road-ready in the spring. We sought out a locally-owned mobile bike clinic to help us make it happen! The bike mechanics kept hard at work all day cleaning chains, adjusting brakes, and inspecting tires. Christopher and our Safety Manager, Rick, set up a table to do quick repair demos and to answer bike route questions. We invited local transportation experts to join the celebration and chat with our team about using alternative modes of transportation.
Every year, we participate in our local Business Commute Challenge (BCC). We compete against other businesses to see who can log the most miles walking, biking, busing, and carpooling. Now our staff is all geared up and eager to compete during the BCC this May!
Mountain Rose Herbs encourages employees to use alternative modes of transportation year-round through our Alternative Commute Program. We pay staff members who carpool to work $0.15 per mile for each passenger, and bus commuters receive $0.15 per mile as well. Those who bicycle or walk to work get $0.25 per mile. Every year, we reward the employee who logs the most miles in each category an additional $250.
We make biking to work easy! Employees have access to a covered and locked bike depot, indoor lockers, showers, and a bicycle repair kit. These employee perks also earned Mountain Rose Herbs the designation of a Bicycle Friendly Business from the League of American Bicyclists for the first time in 2013. Last year, we went from the Bronze to Silver level for creating a welcoming atmosphere for bicycling.
These are just some of the many ways we encourage staff to stay healthy and reduce their carbon footprint.
