Homemade Sweet Basil Lip Scrub

Written by Jessicka | March 24, 2021

Of all of the DIY skin and body care products I love to make, share, and write about, lip care products are easily my favorite. It sounds trivial, and it might be, but I have a lip balm recipe for just about every season, mood, and occasion. It’s something that I use so often, it brings me great joy to create new, unique ways of delivering it. And since lip products are so easy to make in bulk, they are always great gifts to share with family members or friends.

While I have mostly shared my DIY lip balm recipes, my kissable creations don’t stop there. Lip scrubs are also an important product to have in your DIY toolbox. The job of lip balms is to maintain moisture on your smackers, but they are unable to help revive or remove the skin that is past the point of no return. That’s where lip scrubs come in!

This slightly abrasive mixture helps to carry away dry, dead layers of skin to unveil the soft and supple tissue so that you can do lots of yapping without your lips feeling like they’re contortionists. Scrubs are also incredibly helpful to those who enjoy wearing lipstick. Starting with a fresh and even canvas allows lip color to be applied more evenly.

While I chose basil as the theme for this scrub, there are other aromas that you can choose from, such as lavender, rosemary, peppermint, or coriander, to name a few.

Sweet Basil Lip Scrub Recipe

Makes about 6 tubes.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Pour apricot kernel oil, essential oil, and vitamin E into a small bowl and stir.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and mix with fork until you have a well-combined paste consistency.
  3. Pack mixture tightly into lip balm tube until full.
  4. Place lid on and label each tube so you know what it is and when you made it.

How to Use Lip Scrub

  1. Over the sink or a towel, gently rub lip balm stick in a circular motion on the lips.
  2. Allow to sit for a few minutes and rinse off with warm water or wipe off with a warm washcloth.
  3. Pat dry and immediately apply your favorite hydrating lip balm.

Pro tips

  • While this technique sounds like it defies all principles of gravity, I’ve found that it’s easiest to flip your lip balm tube upside down and press it into the mixture. This will help push the scrub into the tube while not making a huge mess.
  • If you would prefer to not make these in tubes, the scrub can be stored in tins or jars instead. I prefer the tubes for its ease and tidiness during use.
  • If you are only making these for yourself, you can cut this recipe in half. (You should still share one so you can show off your DIY skills, though!)
