Here at Mountain Rose Herbs, we work hard to do business in a way that leaves the lightest possible footprint on this earth. Each year we publish a detailed report to measure and monitor our sustainability efforts and provide our customers the transparency they deserve. We're still working on our 2017 report but couldn't help ourselves from sharing some initial results with you!
2017 Sustainability Report Highlights
- We saved more water. We continue to improve our water conservation efforts, even as we grow. In 2017, we saved an additional 37,500 gallons of water compared to our 2016 usage.
- We encouraged a car-free lifestyle. We renewed our Bicycle Friendly Business designation and went from Bronze to Silver! We also paid our employees over $12,000 for walking, biking, or riding the bus to work as part of our Alternative Commute Program!
- We cleaned up the environment. We sponsored 12 Mountain Rose River Projects, removing 385 gallons of trash, clearing 12 cubic yards of invasive plants, and planting 265 trees and native plants in and around Eugene, Oregon. And we received the 2017 Innovation in Philanthropy award from the Portland Business Journal recognizing our charitable giving and the nonprofit partnerships fostered through this project.
- We made our catalog even more sustainable. While we've always sought out the most earth-friendly options we can find, we redesigned our Autumn/Winter catalog and discovered an FSC-certified printer who could achieve our dream of printing on 100% post-consumer-waste recycled paper! Compared to a catalog made with virgin fiber, we saved 871 trees (the equivalent of 2 football fields) and reduced water usage, energy consumption, and more.
- We maintained our zero-waste certification. While we're still tallying our exact waste diversion numbers for 2017, we're confident we'll maintain our status as the first and only zero-waste certified company in the state of Oregon. For the first time, we also completed a third-party waste assessment with BRING, and the organization applauded our existing efforts and even helped us find ways to improve our recycling practices.
