How To Use Shea Nut Oil

Written by Our Products | May 25, 2017

While most folks are quite familiar with shea butter, we've found that organic shea nut oil often gets overlooked. Much like shea butter, it makes an absolutely lovely addition to many body care products.

What is Shea Nut Oil?

Shea nut oil is the oil extracted from the shea nut, which is native to Africa. Shea nut oil has been used for thousands of years as a valuable ingredient to nourish skin and hair.

How is Shea Nut Oil Made?

During the expeller process for the butter, a small amount of fractionated liquid oil is extracted directly from the nut. This oil is thick and can be slightly cloudy because of the fat content. It contains oleic acid, which can be very beneficial for the skin and hair.

What is Shea Nut Oil Used for?

While shea nut oil can be applied directly to the skin or hair, we also enjoy using it in some of our favorite body care recipes. Here are three ways you can try:

  1. Add shea nut oil when making your favorite homemade soaps. It has a naturally high saponification value, and it will add a slightly nutty aroma to your bars.
  2. Use as an ingredient in your creams and lotions. Shea nut oil works well when added as 3-20% of your formulations.
  3. Try using shea nut oil as a hot oil treatment to nourish your scalp. Add a few drops of Rosemary Essential Oil for even greater benefit.
