Best Winter Essential Oils & Winter Diffuser Blend

Written by Elise | December 8, 2022

By the time winter rolls around, I usually find myself seeking cozy comfort, uplifting cheer, and robust wellness support. While fuzzy blankets, social gatherings, and immune-boosting herbal teas are tried and true, I also look to aromatherapy as an essential wintertime ally.

Below you will find a list of my favorite essential oils to use during the winter, grouped into three categories: evergreen, resinous, and uplifting. For me, these essential oils evoke the essence of the season while also providing soothing comfort or a gentle uplift. Even better, many also have specific therapeutic effects– making them mentally, emotionally, and physically supportive. Please be sure to do additional research on any new essential oils before trying them in your home.

Evergreen Essential oils

In many cultures, evergreen trees are considered a symbol of life, as they retain their needles and vibrancy when other flora have shed their leaves or disappeared underground. Their recognizable coniferous scent is both uplifting and grounding which can be beneficial during the holiday haze and when the stretch of cool grey days starts to become bleak. These evergreen scents are typically considered middle notes and make a great foundation in holiday diffuser blends.

Resinous Essential oils

Warming in nature, botanical resins inherently bring about comfort and a sense of inward awareness. Resinous oils were traditionally used in ceremonial settings and are also known for their ability to support balance and calm. These aromas are considered base notes, adding a sweet earthiness to winter essential oil blends.

  • Frankincense: Woody, complex aroma.
  • Myrrh: Warming, soft, and earthy scent.
  • Benzoin: Sweet, vanilla-like scent with spicy undertones.
  • Opopanax: Resinous, sweet-balsamic aroma.

Uplifting Essential oils for winter

This category encompasses a range of essential oils that I like to use in wintertime due to their uplifting scents. I find these oils to be wonderful companions for a fireside read or when diving into learning a new skill. These oils range from top to middle notes and add a zesty, awakening kick and emotional uplift to winter diffuser blends.

  • Bergamot: Sweet and floral, orange-scented aroma.
  • Fresh Ginger: Bright, zesty, yet warming scent.
  • Rosemary: A well-known, herbaceous scent. Can be quite stimulating for some, consider what time of day you use this oil as it may not encourage sleep.
  • Peppermint: Classic minty scent. Can be quite stimulating for some, consider what time of day you use this oil as it may not encourage sleep.
  • Bay Laurel: Camphoraceous and complex aroma.

Most of the above essential oils blend well together. I suggest experimenting and adjusting to find a winter diffuser blend that works for you and provides the support your body and mind are looking for (comfort, cleansing the air, etc.). I also recommend trying our essential oil blends expertly crafted in-house such as our Breathe Blend, Calming Blend, or Support Blend. These can be wonderful ready-to-go allies to have on hand throughout the season. If looking for an uplifting winter scent, try the diffuser blend below:
