Aroma Oils for Spring: DIY Diffuser and Fragrance Oils

Written by Jessicka | March 25, 2023

Spring is in the air, and I’m more than ready to refresh my spirits, feel the sun on my face, and set out on new adventures. With that in mind, I’ve been gathering up my supplies to craft some of my favorite DIY essential oil blends for spring, ones that our Mountain Rose Herbs’ in-house aromatherapist developed with careful intent to clear the mind of lingering winter fog and bring the power and pleasure of aromatherapy wherever we travel, whether it’s a grand European tour or a trip to the grocery store. Warmer days are just over the horizon, which means now is the perfect time to create diffuser blends, fragrance oils, and aroma sprays in preparation for the annual blossoming of spring.

Because these recipes are measured in parts, you can make as much or as little as you like. When I’m working with a new recipe, I like to make a small test batch so I can explore how I feel about it over time before I commit more of my precious essential oils and other ingredients to the experiment. If you want to start small, you can consider “one part” to be one drop of oil. So, if a recipe calls for four parts of a particular oil, that would be four drops. Once you know you like a blend, these recipes are easy to size up.

One note of caution about how much essential oils to add to a recipe: If you are blending for a skin cream or body spray, which you will use all over your body, make sure your essential oil blend makes up no more than 1-2% of your total recipe. For example, a 1 oz. bottle would have just 6-12 drops of the essential oil blend. If you are making a perfume, which is used much more sparingly on the body, you can add as much as 5% essential oils. To understand how to dilute essential oils safely—or if you’d like a little assistance with the math—check out our essential oil dilution chart, calculator, and ratio guide.

I’ve given you some ideas below about how to use each blend, but don’t limit yourself to my ideas. These are perfect to play with and make them uniquely your own. Happy spring!

Soft Clean Breeze

The soft, cleansing combination of citrus laced with lightly spiced nutmeg is a classic spring aroma. For this blend, we top off this blend with a wonderfully woodsy touch of fresh fir needle.

Ingredients

Suggested Use

Soft Clean Breeze makes an excellent air freshener, either for use in a diffuser or wax melts or as a room spray or linen spray. You can also take it on the road with you by adding a couple of drops to a terra cotta pendant diffuser to hang from the rearview mirror or with a travel-friendly car diffuser

Out to Play

This is a sweet, playful blend intended to wake up the senses after their long winter nap. Benzoin resin is a cost-saving substitute for vanilla essential oil and combines here perfectly with sweet orange and earthy carrot seed oil. This happy blend is reminiscent of sunny adventures.

Ingredients

Suggested Use

Out to Play is excellent for gentle DIY skincare products and perfumes that make you think of warmer days. It smells bright and sunny in skin creams and solid perfumes. Because benzoin resin oil has a thick, sticky consistency, it does not disperse well in liquid carrier oils, so is not ideal for sprays or liquid perfumes.

Pro Tip: The trick to blending with resin essential oils like benzoin is to begin by blending the resin oil with a small amount of your ingredients and the rest of the essential oils, then add this blend to the rest of the recipe. This will help to keep it from clumping up.

Spring Flowers

Nothing says “spring” like a garden of blooming flowers! This luxurious blend of neroli and jasmine absolute creates an impressively floral aromatic treat for the senses. If you don’t have both of these precious essential oils or you want to make a cost-saving substitution, you can use organic lavender essential oil for either one instead.

Ingredients

Suggested Use

Spring Flowers is wonderful in DIY skincare products and perfumes, and scents a room with floral luxury when used in a diffuser or wax melts.

Awakening

The energizing, balancing eucalyptus oil in this blend combines with petitgrain and uplifting rosemary essential oils to create a sharp, penetrating blend that is perfect for pulling your spirits out of the winter doldrums.

Ingredients

Suggested Use

Awakening is ideal for diffusing or as a room spray or body spray when you need to wake up your brain.
