As we prepare to have guests over through the holiday months, it’s important that our friends and family feel comfortable when nature calls. After all, the key to life is not letting anyone know that you, in fact, have bowel movements. All kidding aside, it’s a sensitive subject for many, so giving your guest options that don’t involve heavy synthetic fragrances or noisy and environmentally harmful aerosol cans is both considerate and helpful.
How Do Toilet Deodorizing Sprays Work?
Toilet sprays like Poo-Pourri work in layers. The alcohol acts as a natural solubilizer for the essential oils, meaning it helps to disperse the oils so that they don’t sit on the top of the blend. Alcohol also helps to kill odor-causing bacteria. Meanwhile, the vegetable glycerin helps to give the spray body so that it “sticks” to the water. This helps to keep odor molecules below the water’s surface, helping to eliminate those unwanted odors from reaching the air.
This easy, inexpensive blend is far more cost-effective than the store-purchased version and you can upcycle your bottles over and over. Easy, inexpensive, and effective—what more could you ask for?

Odor-Eliminating Tips for the Bathroom
- Keep a diffuser going: Bathroom diffusers help to release the pleasant aroma of the areas surrounding the bathroom, and will assist with odor prevention when a little more help is needed.
- Turn on your favorite wax melter: Wax melters work similarly to diffusers, but generally put off a nice soft light and can be decorative pieces as well. Learn how to make your own wax melts here!
- Make an herbal potpourri: While this does not work quite as well as a diffuser or wax melter, botanical potpourri blends made with fresh essential oils can add a subtle aroma for those with fragrance sensitivities.
- Shutting the lid when you flush will also help to contain odors.
- Keep in mind that you will want your toilet spray aroma to match any other scents you may be using in or around the bathroom. This reminds me to tell you that this blend is fully customizable to match your theme! Simply replace the above essential oils with a total of 50-70 drops of oils of your choice.
